TATAU VILLAGE, TATAU ISLAND, TABAR ISLANDS

126km from Kavieng Town

The islands of Tabar boast of cultural practices which they maintain and practice to this day.

New Ireland Art – Malagan Carvings from the Tabar Islands are extraordinary art objects which are treasured the world over. One of New Ireland’s renown artists of our time, Edward Sale, lived and created just 500m from Andi Guesthouse. Other master carvers of Tabar are Maris Memenga and the late Leppan.

Culture and Tradition – The Kuk people on Tatau Island are carefree, friendly and steeped in the culture and tradition of their forebears. They especially welcome those who are interested in learning their culture and the relationship of their art to the community.

Visitors to the area can view with wonder the traditional ceremonies and cultural dances that are a natural part of the life-style of the people. Whether participating on or just watching the local entertainment, taking part in organised leisure activities or just walking around the village and observing day-to-day activities of the people, you can be assured you will enjoy the experience of the Tabar Islands.

Adventure Activities – For those who would like to swim or snorkel, you can’t beat the water clarity and the variety of coral fish which are protected here on the reef.

And the fishing just beyond the reef in unbelievable with a catch of tuna, barracuda or mackerel almost assured. It is the ideal base for all excursions to the other islands of the group. Strolling along the trails on the island provides wonderful opportunities to view rich rainforests at close quarters. Experience walking between the towering kwila trees which provide a perfect canopy for the island’s beautiful birds and multi-coloured butterflies
