We recommend that you drink bottled water, which is easily available and affordable. Some guesthouses will also have rainwater tanks for drinking water.
I am vegetarian. Will I find it difficult travelling in New ireland?
There is an abundance of fruits and vegetables in New Ireland, so there is plenty for you to eat. Most guesthouses understand the concept of not eating meat or seafood, and can prepare dishes for you to suit. If you are vegan or don’t eat eggs, you may want to bring some high-protein non-perishable items with you, like chia seeds that you can just mix with some coconut milk. Dairy is not widely used in villages, apart from maybe milk powder for tea & coffee.
if i was to bring some presents to give to children in the villages, what is suggested?
Handing out pencils, little notepads or exercise books and erasers are great gifts for the kids. Try to avoid plastic items, as they only end up breaking and in a rubbish pile somewhere. The best thing about stationery items or school supplies is that you can buy them in Kavieng, so no need to bring them all the way from home with you. Other gifts that go down well are things like volleyballs or footballs (and a pump!). Out in the islands, little tiny fishing hooks and fine fishing line is really appreciated by everyone, not just the kids. And again, you can buy all of these in Kavieng.
Also, if you have old pairs of sunglasses, or any children’s clothes (suitable to warm climates) or t-shirts you never wear anymore - bring them along as these kinds of things are really appreciated in the remote areas.
Do I need immunisations before visiting new ireland?
The World Health Organisation recommends the following travel vaccinations for Papua New Guinea:
Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Japanese Encephalitis, rabies and polio.
We recommend that you consult your doctor for the most up to date information.
What about the mosquitoes?
Malaria and dengue are two common mosquito-borne diseases found in the country. Make sure you’re protected by using mosquito-netting and insect repellents. Antimalarials may also be recommended depending on your itinerary.

Yes. All international visitors must carry a valid driver’s licence from their home country to drive a car in New Ireland.
If you are planning on staying for an extended period of time in New Ireland, you will need to get a local driver’s licence. And again, this is only possible if the driver presents a full drivers’ licence from their country of origin.
We do however recommend getting a vehicle with a driver or a guide for the best experience. Find a list of our Tour Guides here.
How do I get from the airport to my hotel?
Kavieng Airport is only a few minutes from the centre of town.
Many accommodation providers provide their own airport transfer service - enquire when you book. Taxi drivers accept cash and a price is agreed on before departure.
Can I use my credit card in new ireland?
Yes, however most small businesses do not accept credit cards and you shouldn't consider it as a reliable form of payment. It is always a good idea to carry sufficient Kina to cover meals, activities, and accommodation, especially outside of the Kavieng Town area. If using your credit card, a bank fee will apply for each transaction.
How should I dress in new ireland?
For an Island province wrestling with its past and its present, certain cultural taboos are still observed so dress code is very important. The region is warm with a tropical climate, high temperature and humidity. Villagers are friendly and welcoming but they can be fairly conservative so always wear skirts or shorts that cover their thighs. Swimming costumes can be too revealing so it's recommended in areas close to villages that men wear board shorts and women wear shorts and t-shirts or sarong. Essentially, modest dressing is recommended.
are tourists welcome to walk through villages?
Generally speaking, yes. You never know what may be going on within a village on any given day, so it is always polite to ask the first person you see if it is appropriate, as you are essentially walking through their homes. Because New Ireland does not experience tourists on a mass scale like other destinations around the world, tourists are more likely to be followed everywhere and stared at by everyone anytime they are in the village or on the islands, but you should not get intimidated. These are some of the most memorable experiences you will take home with you!!
